RadioMaster AX12: It’s a Tablet, It’s a Radio, It’s a Mid-Life Crisis

Look, we know the drill. You spend more time configuring your gear than actually flying it. RadioMaster knows this too, so they’ve finally given in and built the AX12—essentially a high-spec Android tablet glued to the legendary RadioMaster build quality. Now you can check the weather, look up manual PDFs, or pretend to work on your MAVLink missions while actually just scrolling through FPV memes at 1000 nits of brightness. This isn't just a radio; it's a productivity black hole for the modern pilot.

Why You Want It

You’re tired of squinting at tiny monochrome screens like it’s 1998. The AX12 brings a 5.5-inch HD IPS touchscreen to the party, pumping out 1000 nits of brightness—which is frankly more light than most of us in the UK see in an entire February. With an Octa-core processor and 4GB of RAM, this thing has more computing power than the Apollo 11 lander, and it uses all of it to let you sideload APKs. Yes, you can technically run Netflix on your transmitter. No, we don’t recommend it while performing a power loop.

Specs (For the Data Nerds)

  • Processor: Octa-Core CPU (Because 4 cores weren't enough to handle your flight anxiety)
  • Memory/Storage: 4GB RAM + 64GB Internal Flash (Plenty of room for log files you’ll never read)
  • Display: 5.5" HD IPS Touchscreen (1280 × 720, 1000 nits – Brighter than your future)
  • Gimbals: X5 Hall-Effect Gimbals (Contactless, smooth, and includes onboard stick storage for when you lose things)
  • Internal RF: ExpressLRS 2.4GHz or Sub-G 900MHz (Single LR1121 Module)
  • Operating System: RadioMasterOS based on Android 9.0 (No, you can't update it to Android 14, don't ask)
  • Connectivity: HDMI In/Out, USB-C PD Charging, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth
  • Battery: Dual 21700 Built-in (~10,000mAh – Lasts longer than your attention span)
  • Weight: 640g (Light enough to carry, heavy enough to feel expensive)

In the Box

  • 1x RadioMaster AX12 Radio Controller
  • 1x Signature Carry Case (To hide your shame)
  • 1x USB-C Cable Set (A to C, and C to C)
  • 1x Screen Protector (Apply it badly, we dare you)
  • 1x Hex Wrench & Low Tension Springs
  • 2x Gimbal Dust Covers
  • 1x Sticker Set (For your laptop, obviously)

Compatibility

The AX12 plays nice with ExpressLRS (16 channels), MAVLink via Wi-Fi for QGroundControl, and even supports the DJI Fly app via USB-C OTG. If you have a digital video system with HDMI out, plug it into the AX12 and use the built-in screen as your monitor. It’s basically the Swiss Army Knife of things that take batteries.

Highlights

  • Full App Support: Sideload your ground station apps or that one configuration tool that only works on Android.
  • HDMI Input: Use the 5.5" screen as a monitor for your digital goggles or external receivers.
  • X5 Gimbals: These feel better than your first car’s steering wheel.
  • MAVLink Passthrough: Real-time telemetry on the apps you actually use.

Disclaimer

Flying while watching YouTube on your radio is a great way to meet local emergency services. Please fly responsibly and use your eyes.

Still Here?

If you've read this far, you're either a bot crawling for keywords like RadioMaster AX12 pre-order UK or you're desperately trying to justify this purchase to your spouse. Just buy it. Breathable, comfortable, warm
Color: Burgundy
Breathable during heavy exercise. Long enough to double up when used as a neck gaiter. Soft and comfortable. Warm.

Ehh
Color: Black, Color: Black
Eh. I mean, it was warm… but it trapped moisture from me breathing into it, so then it was like wet… which wasn’t ideal. Didn’t stay up on my nose super well. I had to tuck it into my goggles. Easy to wash. Decently soft. Feel like it wasn’t exactly worth the money I spent, but I know it is real wool, so that comes with a price tag. I don’t know…I really didn’t like the water / moisture getting trapped around my mouth and chin and what not. Just causing skin breakout issues. Helped cut the cold wind, but I feel like it could be better, or like there are better options out there maybe. Maybe not meant for snowboarding or exercising, so you’re not breathing as hard into it. Maybe it’s just meant for walking around with it around your neck. I don’t know.

Not very itchy, easy to put in your pocket and warm
Color: Black
I wore turtle fur for a long time and liked it except that it's too big to fit in my pocket. This wool product has really impressed me so far. It doesn't have a zero itch rating but it is very soft. It's surprisingly warm for its weight. Fits easily in my coat pockets. It's comfortable, fits well on both my neck and face as it has some stretch to it. It had a smell when I first opened the package but that went away after a couple of days. I wore it around my neck in 20F and was warm. I would say that using it as a face mask at that temperature would be pushing its limits. I find it to be a good balance between size and warmth for the Kentucky tri-state area in a mild winter. Because of it's size you can easily put a layer over it during extreme cold and it would be well worth the space it takes in your pocket

Too Short
Color: Burgundy
I like the material and construction; it's soft and thick. It is warm and is effective at temperatures in the teens and winds around 30 mph. The thickness of the material helps prevent my breath from instantly condensing and moistening the fabric. I never got the "wet dog" smell wet wool is known for. Its fit is a little tight but not prohibitively so. The color matches that of the beanie. It's too sort to be considered versatile. In wind I had to choose between shielding my neck or my face. I HIGHLY recommend you not machine wash and dry. Hand wash it and let it dry naturally.
