Ik zie iets in een film of op Instagram (vooral veel Instagram) krijg inspiratie en dan ga ik schetsen of gelijk achter de ipad. Maar ik vind het ook zalig om pop art te maken. Ik maak veel werk in de Bad Boy collectie. Die scenarios's komen in mijn hoofd op en dat moét eruit. Ik zie iets in een film of op Instagram (vooral veel Instagram...) krijg inspiratie en dan ga ik schetsen of gelijk achter de ipad.

Maar ik vind het ook zalig om pop art te maken. In de geest van Andy Warhol maar dan getekend. Warhol maakte polaroids van celebrities (of zijn eigen superstars) en zocht naar mijn manieren om die foto's, die beelden iconisch te maken. Wat werkte. De Marilyn Monroe prints zijn legendarisch geworden. En daar vind ik weer inspiratie om deze Marlon Brando in de huidige tijdsgeest te plaatsen. The Godfather is één van mijn lievelingsfilms omdat het alles in zich heeft, geweld, lef, branie, de opkomst, de handelsgeest, eer, familie. 

Warhol was bezeten van bekendheden en glamour. Ik heb dat zelf minder, maar ik vind symbolen wel interessant. Wat roept de Godfather bij je op. En hoe werkt het als je er een bekend modemerk bij zet? Wat gebeurt er dan met het beeld met de kijker. Celebrites zijn symbolen geworden, nog meer dan in de tijd van Warhol.

Acteurs kunnen een rol zodanig neerzetten dat het een symbool wordt. Hoe Brando dat deed met zijn wangen en maniertjes zijn legendarische. Maar bijvoorbeeld ook Heath Ledger als Joker, Al Pacino als Scarface. 

Daar zijn ook memes bijgekomen. En die beeldcultuur heeft een vlucht genomen. Taal wordt aangevuld met symbolen. En soms is het logo de meme, de emoji de boodschap zelf. Het mixen van de symbolen en in een andere context plaatsen vind ik mooi. En jij ook, want jij hebt dit geouwehoer helemaal afgelezen. Dus koop dan ook maar en maak iets moois van dat miserabele leventje van je.
